So the auditioning continues.  And I continue to aim high.  WTF is wrong with me?

Sweeney Todd auditions Tuesday.  They're requesting 1) to sing music provided by them, and 2) to have all music and dialogue memorized by the time rehearsals start.

Sondheim is easily the most difficult songwriter on Broadway.  I'm terrified by this.

Especially since I'm narrowing my audition down to Sweeney himself.  Turpin's too old, Anthony's too young, Beadle's too tenor.  I get to sing the beginning of My Friend, the vast majority of Epiphany, and a chunk of the bass part in the opening ballad.

The hell am I getting myself into?

[info]hear_my_song_07and I attended the touring production of Spamalot last night, where we ran into [info]samtabsav and her parents before the show and [info]xturtleand her friend, a-very-nice-lady-who-I-consider-a-good-friend-myself-but-who-I-can't-list-cuz-she-doesn't-have-an-LJ-account-as-far-as-I-know, at intermission and after the show.

Quite possibly the most LJ names I've ever listed in a paragraph.  Sad, really.

Anyway...

Spamalot! )

Whew
Tags are done.

Certainly helped that I used to feel obligated to post every day, and now I don't.

Here's what I have.  I've also listed them all at the bottom, so if you want to jump anywhere from here go ahead.

Starting Chapter 2 of Our Little Wilkins tonight.  If you've read Chapter 1, you know that things are going to get interesting.

Or from, um, callbacks.  Yeah, sorry, I always love that title, and I use it whenever it's not even applicable.

- You never really know what you're going to get when you get into some community theatre shows.  Shows like Grease, shows like West Side Story, the cast can vary WIDELY.  I've seen productions of either show where the cast is in their 20's with a few 30's sprinkled in.  Then you can come to an audition like I did last night where the average age was, oh, 15?  16?  I was the oldest guy in the room, which means I'm fairly sure which roles I'll be getting already.

Which sucks, cuz if it WAS one of those 20's-30's kinda shows, I'd have such a lock on one of the leads.  Man, I killed Greased Lightning.

- While the girls were auditioning their music, they left the guys with some sheet music and the song we were singing on CD.

The girls took a long time.

We ended up hearing the song about two or three dozen times before we turned it off.

It's still stuck in my head.

Help me.

- I've said it before, and I'll say it again:  It's really fun having bi female friends.  Hanging out before dance auditions, my friend sits down next to me, leans over, and whispers "My dance partner's really cute.  God, I can't stop looking at her!"

She was cute.  And so was my friend.  It was hilarious.

- In not-so-related news, my iPod's sitting at the post office for me to pick up tonight.

*does a happy jig*

Anyone who's started reading my blog within the past year, due to New Mutants, Seven Soldiers, etc etc etc, may not be aware of this, but I haven't always been a fanfic nerd.  I've only been one for about a year and a half, two years.

Before that time, and during that time, I was a community theatre junkie.  Ever since high school I've done at least one show a year, and after I graduated college I was running at three or four shows a year.  If I had a month off between shows I started getting antsy to get started on another one.  I've played every type of role in that time, from Bill Sykes and Mr. Applegate to Perchik and the Cowardly Lion.

Last summer I started getting burned out.  I got talked into coming into a show in the middle of its rehearsal process about two weeks after I moved into my condo last March, and it was far from the best experience.  I followed that up with Wizard of Oz, and directly after that with a well-written, well-produced, not-very-well-received Fringe Festival production.  I walked out of that one realizing that I had bought myself a place and had barely spent any time there.

So I took a season off.  Was going to aim at finding a show to do that winter.  Three months turned into four.  Four months turned into six.  Which comes to today, where I haven't been onstage since early August.

What can I say?  I discovered that I still liked doing theatre, but it wasn't the energy source that it used to be.  I started getting pickier.  Plus my new location didn't have nearly as many quality options as my old apartment.  Add to that the 200,000 words that I've written in the meantime, and it shows that I wasn't really NEEDING to get back.

A few months ago I had decided that I should really get back into the groove.  It was just a matter of deciding which of two shows that I had partial interest in that I wanted to do least, and cross it off my list.

Auditions for one is this weekend.  And after two  months of trying to decide which way I'm going, I've made a decision.

Grease, here I come.

Okay, after appearing in three Fringe Festival shows in the past four years, I have come to a few conclusions in the Quest for a Popular Show:

1) Stay away from anything even remotely mainstream.

2) Call reviewers to come see your show.  There's a couple hundred shows in the fringe, yet it seems that the same dozen get reviewed in all three major papers around here.  And even a bad review will get you better audiences than no review.

3) Make a strange title.  Free Falling:  bad.  Marie Taglioni Is Not a Dish of Pasta:  good.

4) Have at least one of the following:  Nudity, a gay character, feminist empowerment, Bush-bashing, or puppets.  If you have none of these, then you're in trouble.

In light of these revelations, I would like to introduce my next show for next year's Fringe Festival:

Quirky Title & Nipples
(warning: may have neither)

I think my director put it best:

"Next time I do a show at the Fringe, I'm going to do a teen-orientated play about cursing gay terrorist puppets exploding nude women at a dancing 80's disco then eating them while Irish dancing to vampire lawyer improv."

Anyone looking to come see a Fringe show?

Come to Free Falling!

I'm in it!

Here's the site!

If you don't know who I am, then you probably know I'm a guy, so that narrows it down to two.

Oh, and I probably should have started this countdown earlier, but here ya go:

Justin Morneau: now 1 home run away from 30, the first Twin to do so since Hrbek, Brunansky, and Gaetti in 1987.

I'm at my new desk right now, attempting to do my new job.

I was doing all fine and dandy until I suddenly discovered that, hey, my log-ins aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing.

So here I sit.  Waiting for IT to get around to me.

Quick summary of the weekend:  if anyone is planning on going to a production of Wizard of Oz currently playing in the area, feel free to slam your hand in a car door first.  Might make it less painful by comparison.

So...

Work.

Fringe Festival rehearsal.

Doesn't leave a lot of time to have a life.

Or anything worth writing about on the blog.

I could tell you all about some of the new toys I picked up, how's that?

The Giant Mini-Cons?

Unicron as a tank?

How about Mission Impossible III, which was probably the best of the franchise, which isn't saying much?

No?

Okay then...

1) Collected all my Items
2) Beat Sephiroth at level, oh, 94?
3) Promised myself I wouldn't talk much after the show Saturday
4) Promptly attempted to talk over loud children for 2 hours at the cast party Saturday night
5) Drove home a 16-year-old girl to her grumpy mother at 1:30 AM after the party
6) Proceeded to lose my voice during Sunday's show
7) Became sore, tired, and grumpy during strike (aka set destruction)
8) Beat Symphony of Destruction, Ziggy Stardust, Unsung, and Fat Lip on Expert Mode

Things I Did Not Accomplish Over The Weekend

1) Sleep

Fringe is a go.

Now it's just a matter of:

- Finding the rest of the cast
- Tweaking the script
- Learning how to fly baby dolls in the new space

Otherwise it's lookin nice.

You know, you'd think that, after having a three-day weekend, I'd have something to talk about.

Yeah.

Right.

Nothing much to say, really.  I had three performances that went fairly well, if not exactly glitch-free.  Which is bound to happen when you partake in a hugely-technical show like this one's turning out to be.

Hung out with a friend I haven't seen in a year on Friday, and plan to do so again on Tuesday and Thursday (woo!), had dinner with the fam on Sunday for Father's Day (while finally taking care of that bbq rib craving I've been having for the past few weeks), and doing a load of laundry.

Beyond that, the rest of the weekend was sleep and far too much video games.  I think it's partially making up for lost time, along with the completist in me having a flippin' field day.

Brief summary, for those not in the know:  In the game Kingdom Hearts II, there are two different endings.

Ending number one is very simple:  beat the bad guy.  This is considered to be the "easy ending" to many people.

Ending number two, the "true" ending, can be accomplished two ways:  beat the bad guy in Proud (Hard) Mode, or fully completing the game in Normal Mode.

Fully completing the game involves filling up Jiminy's Journal.  Jiminy's Journal contains:

- Every Enemy
- Every Map
- Every Treasure Chest
- Every Minigame, along with a particular score that must be matched
- Every Synthesis, which means taking a list of items, making one of every item, and collecting at least 20 of every synthesis ingredient in the game

Considering where I was at coming into the weekend, I've made quite a bit of progress.  A lot of that is probably due to the fact that I decided to say "Screw it, I'm using the occasional online FAQ."  Also, when you start playing at 11 am on Saturday, realize it's suddenly 3:30, and you don't even have any pants on yet...  well...  that's how you realize it's been an uneventful day.

Anyway, so, yeah:  I have to beat Sephiroth, I have two more Colosseum battles to beat with a high score, and I have a LOT of items to collect.  Otherwise, I have everything else completed.  Sweet.

Well, the tickle in my throat's gone.

However, after tripping over my costume last night, it's been replaced by a bruised knee, after bashing into the wooden stage.

Ow ow ow ow.

And I think I'm coming down with something.

Of course.

I should have learned my lesson during Fiddler.

Or Oliver.

Or Brigadoon.

Or Music Man.

I should really try to find more shows that don't have kids involved.

Jeez Louise, we could have so much more done in this show if the amount of kids were cut in half.

Rehearsals that should take a half hour are taking over an hour because they won't shut up, won't focus, won't whatever.

Lordy, we open in a week and a half, and there's a few scenes that are so far from ready that it's not even funny.

So, did I write yesterday?

Hell no.

Why?

No clue.

Probably because I have nothing to say.

Except that I'm very tired.

Might have something to do with the fact that I'm getting home from rehearsal after 10 pm every night, then going to the internet for my email.

Then I end up chatting or playing Pogo for another hour or so.

Then I hop into bed and end up reading far much more than I probably should.

Cursed Wizard & Glass, with your Oz references.

And, no, I don't consider that a spoiler.

Bite me.

*headdesk*

*snore*

*jerks awake*

Alright, so, tonight?  No Pogo.

No chat.

I have a big weekend ahead, and I'm going to want to be coherant for it.

You know, I've come to the realization that, so far, I haven't been doing such a hot job over on this new blog.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm liking it.  It's been a good blog to work with so far.

But, damn.

I haven't seen any good movies since Advent Children.

My life's been full of nothing but work and rehearsal, outside of some personal issues that I promised myself I wouldn't delve into in journal form.

Geek news has slowed to a crawl after E3 and the beginning of the summer movie season.

After Soundwave came out, the Transformers releases for the next six or seven months is promising to slow to a trickle of nothing much beyond repaints.  And even the new ones are gonna be either a disappointment compared to SW (Quickmix & Menasor, while both nice, are NOT SW by any stretch of the imagination), or will be held off on as long as possible because I can't afford them right away beyond sale prices. (Primus will start at around $50-60, Metroplex is a leader class at around 40 or 50, and Alternator Optimus is probably gonna cost me $30 minimum).

I really don't have much to say.

In summary, don't be surprised to see a hell of a lot of giraffe in the coming weeks.

EDIT:  On the plus side, I've been able to get enough ramblings on this thing to finally start pushing my fanfics over to page 2.  Dr. Evil, Anya, Super Grover, and Count Dooku have now officially entered the world of archive.

You're next, Neville.  You too, Frog.

Don't you hate it when you want to do a show, then find out that you can't do a show, then find out that you CAN do it after all, and tell the producer that you want to be available for it, then events occur after you say you can do it that make you realize you don't want to do it after all?

I hate when that happens.

No rehearsal tonight.

Social plans that were rough to begin with have now been delayed until tomorrow.

Its a Friday.

I have no life.

And no Playstation.

I think we know what that means.

Now, if only I could find the motivation.
